Add Raid licensekey to a HP Smart Array P421

Any configuration command (e.g. Logical drive creation, array expansion, etc.) or modification to the controller will result in the loss of all existing data on the disabled logical drive(s).' The current configuration of the controller is a P410i embedded slot, running 2 RAID 1 with spare arrays (1 logical drive on each), on a ML350 G6. Solved: Hi all, I have paid a Smart Array Advanced Pack from HP reseller. After installing the license to P410 controller, i see the license information ( picture ).

Note: on rebooting the server I saw this: Slot 0 HP Smart Array P410i Controller (256MB, v3.00) 1 Logical Drive 1716-Slot 0 Drive Array - Unrecoverable Media Errors Detected on Drives during previous Rebuild or Background Surface Analysis (ARM) scan. Errors will be fixed automatically when the sector(s) are overwritten. 256MB cache module, battery kit (for BBWC),and Smart Array Advanced Pack license key for RAID 6 (ADG), & 6+0. € € What's New 512MB Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC) NOTE: For the Smart Array P410i Controller only. 1G Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC) NOTE: For the Smart Array P410i Controller only. QuickSpecs HP Smart Array P410 Controller Overview. I have just spend a lot of mony on new bigger disc. Then i can expand disc cuss BAT is broken. I have bye new bat and cabels. Now i have the problem: The cache for Smart Array P410i in Embedded Slot is disabled because one or more attached batteries are.

For a mass storage application we had to use HP smart array Raid 6 functionality. Usually we bought P812 card which come directly with the Raid 6 features. But those new server I didn’t check the quotation and our supplier shipped us a Smart Array P421 which required the Extend Pack to work with Raid 6.
So after ordering it and going through the various HP web site in order to get my license key, here’s how to add it using the CLI.

And it’s all done now you can create you RAID 6 array

We've been asked to evaluate the possibility to use HP ProLiant DL380 G7server with HP Smart Array P410i controller for small capacity storage.

Although we don't recommend to use such hardware for data storage ithappened to be possible with some caveats.

The overall impression regarding building storage system on HP ProLiantDL380 G7 is miserable.

As expected HP Smart Array P410i is not supporting RAID6 and it is nottransparent to operating system i.e. HDDs will be visible to operatingsystem only as logical devices after they are configured in controller. One of the obvious drawbacks of this is filtering S.M.A.R.T. interfaceso health monitoring will not be possible.Another problem that HDD adding or replacing should be done through HDDcontroller interface first. The latter is available through BIOS menu on boot or using proprietaryHP software which is available for Debian from the following address:

Obviously we want to use at least Linux kernel 3.2 which has new hpsadriver (successor of old cciss).

Unfortunately it was not possible to use hpacucli utility with Linux-3.2without the following workaround (alternatively one may useuname26utility):

If everything goes well the above command will return something like

Examples of using hpacucli command include:

Command similar to the following may be used to configure physical HDD inorder to make it available to operating system:

As soon as disk becomes visible to operating system it may be used by mdadm(software RAID) as usual.

Conclusion:

Considering the above problems with hardware and non-free software that isrequired to operate HP controller, HP offers only overpriced low capacityHDDs.Using 3rd party HDDs may violate the warranty therefore such lock-incombined with poor hardware and software leaves no choice but to recommendlooking for alternatives rather than considering HP ProLiant for reliablestorage solution.
